Lively and engaging conversation filled the R Gallery on Friday, December 8, at the inaugural Members Show opening reception. The impressive selection of artwork encompasses diverse styles and approaches to art-making. There is something for everyone- images cover the spectrum of acrylic, oil, watercolor, monotype, drawing, collage, pastel, photography and felting. This celebration of creativity runs through January 13th during Arlene’s business hours, Mon-Fri 10-6 and Sat 10-5.
R Gallery director Andrew Ochal described the challenge of arranging an assortment of original art into a cohesive display: “With such a distinct range of subjects and media, we focused largely on color to create a visual flow spanning the gallery.” The thirty-two pieces are priced from $50 to $250- most are under $100 and are approximately 8x10 in size and ready to hang- perfect for gifting.
While explaining the origins of their work, several artists discussed the benefits of being part of a group of kindred creators. Marilyn Marshall was quick to note, “There are wonderful teachers at Arlene’s. I began here with a linoleum block printmaking class led by Maria D’Angelo and feel that I’m now finding my voice as an artist and stretching my skills.” Inspired by underwater photos while researching on line, she created a stylized watercolor and ink titled Sacred Koi which is on view in the show.
Mary Sherwood and Lynne Huntington conversed about their artistic paths as well. Mary reflected, “I’ve taken classes here and appreciate supporting a local business that offers quality products. And, this place is so welcoming and inclusive.” Lynne initially participated in a Makers Mart and subsequently began showing paintings at R Gallery. Her Ribbon Candy and Mary’s Autumn Grass mirror the artists’ mutual devotion to developing a skilled practice in fine art.
The Member Program is designed to foster connections in the creative community.
