A Contemporary Cabinet of Curiosities
The R Gallery at Arlene’s is pleased to announce Room of Wonders, a juried group exhibition that transforms the gallery into a contemporary Cabinet of Curiosities. Inspired by the Renaissance Wunderkammer, or “room of wonders,” the exhibition brings together artists whose work evokes curiosity, discovery, and the marvels of the natural and imagined world. Historically, cabinets of curiosities were encyclopedic collections that blended art, science, nature, and the uncanny—precursors to modern museums and laboratories of wonder.
Room of Wonders reinterprets this tradition for the 21st century. The exhibition features work that engage with themes of nature, invention, cultural hybridity, scientific inquiry, and the extraordinary. Through dense, intimate installation strategies reminiscent of early collections, the R Gallery becomes an immersive environment where visitors are invited to explore, question, and rediscover the joy of looking close.
The exhibition was juried by the R Gallery at Arlene's staff and includes artists working across a wide range of media, including sculpture, painting, drawing, ceramics, textiles, photography, assemblage, and digital art.
“Cabinets of curiosities were spaces where knowledge was fluid and wonder were central,” says the Adnrew Ochal, Gallery Director and curator. “This exhibition invites visitors to experience that sense of discovery and to see how contemporary artists continue to explore the mysteries and marvels of the world.”
Room of Wonders is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs October 2, 2026, through November 18, 2026, with an Artist Reception on Halloween, October 31, 2026, from 1 to 3 pm. The R Gallery at Arlene’s is located inside Arlene’s Artist Materials at 57 Fuller Rd Albany NY 12205. Admission is free, and the exhibit is open during regular store hours—Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and closed on Sundays.
