Pick A Card: featuring art by AIR, Maria DeAngelo

The R Gallery at Arlene's is thrilled to announce its upcoming exhibition, "Pick A Card," featuring the remarkable work of our artist-in-residence, Maria DeAngelo. This captivating exhibition, showcasing a fresh selection of mixed media acrylic on cards, unveils a remarkable collection of fragments from Maria's life. These works were meticulously crafted during her tenure as an Artist in Residence at Arlene's.

Maria's artistic journey takes us on a deeply personal exploration of existence. From love letters cherished by her parents to fragments of a mylar birthday balloon and paint-stained paper towels, "Pick A Card" invites viewers to contemplate how we experience life's intricacies.

In Maria's own words, "When creating this body of work, I gave myself the challenge to limit the color palette of the backgrounds to five colors that I used in varied amounts in every piece in the show. These colors are the bridge between the bits of life collage and the final layer of flora." The inclusion of flowers in her pieces holds a poignant symbolism; their short lifespan and susceptibility to the environment mirror the human experience. There is beauty not just in the external appearance of flowers but in the concealed inner workings that enable them to grow, adapt, and sustain life.

Maria's belief is that our lives and our sense of self are a patchwork quilt, woven from the interactions and environments we've encountered and the choices we make as we move forward. We are a blend of our past and present, embracing both the beautiful and the blemished. "Pick A Card" serves as an inspiring reminder to seek beauty in the small moments and to champion change, not only for ourselves but also for others.
