Urban Sketching: People & Places with Ottavia Huang

Adding people in our sketch could be a fun way to capture the atmosphere of a place. In this workshop, Ottavia will guide you through creating a lively scene full of people using watercolor —either from a photograph or direct observation. You’ll move step‑by‑step from the initial pencil design to clean ink outlines with a pen and finally to expressive watercolor washes that bring your scene to life.

Along the way, you’ll learn how to simplify figures, suggest movement, and use thoughtful mark-making to build character and depth. Ottavia will help you understand how people can enhance composition, create narrative, and add to your sketches—whether you’re drawing in a café, at a park, or from a favorite photo.
