Approaches to Composition with artist in residence Ken Rutsky

Approaches to Composition is a five-week course by artist Ken Rutsky that explores the theory and practice of composition using any two-dimensional medium. Composition is the bedrock on which good drawing or painting in any style rests, and improving your compositional sense will lead to dramatic improvements in your art.

Rather than prescribe One True Way of composing a picture, Ken will instead introduce you to a variety of ways to compose a picture. Learn about notan and value studies, how to use grids and armatures to structure a piece, how color affects the composition, as well as more conceptual, creative, and intuitive approaches to the subject. We will look at a variety of sources for inspiration ranging from illustration and painting to photography, cinema, and even magazine layouts. In the end, you will have all the tools you need to make engaging art with confidence.
