Entangled Horizons

March 6, 2026, to, March 27, 2026

Arlene’s Artist Materials and the R Gallery at Arlene’s are proud to present Entangled Horizons, a solo exhibition of recent work by Carolyn DiFiori Hopkins. Entangled Horizons presents a body of work in which atmosphere becomes both subject and presence. In this collection of paintings and studies, Carolyn DiFiori Hopkins focuses on the shifting light and veils of color that shape the New York State landscape. The works are organized around three moments—sunrise, dusk, and night—each capturing a time when the world becomes especially mutable and when sky, cloud, and horizon begin to dissolve into one another. At dusk, bright colors emerge briefly before fading into dark silhouettes; at sunrise and at night, perception softens and the boundaries of the landscape become porous.

Rather than depicting a specific place, Hopkins uses atmospheric perspective to create a sense of vastness and quiet. Land becomes mass and temperature, while the sky takes on an active, breathing presence rather than serving as a backdrop. Each painting sits at the threshold between illumination and shadow, offering the fleeting sensation of looking outward into distance while also being drawn inward toward stillness.

These works are not fixed scenes but meditations on transition. Light gathers, recedes, and reforms; color moves across the surface like weather. What emerges is a sustained contemplation of the fragile seam where earth meets sky—a space where clarity gives way to ambiguity and the familiar becomes momentarily unbound. In Entangled Horizons, atmosphere is not something observed from afar but something inhabited, reminding us that nature is as much felt as it is seen, and that light itself is never still.
