About the event

Masks have been essential parts of storytelling in every culture in the world, from every time period in history. From Japanese Noh Theater to Carnivale Festivals, from Greek tragedies to ComicCon cosplays, masks help us immerse ourselves in a character, to embody their essence, and to keep stories alive from generation to generation. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to step outside their comfort zone, or cosplayers looking for an outlet for a new creation. In this class, makers will turn basic mask forms into masterpieces of melodrama, using paper clay, wool fibers, acrylic paint, and other recycled/upcycled materials.

The first session will include learning armature and foam techniques for building the shape of the mask, and sculpting it to allow for freedom of speech and movement. Over the week, the masks will dry, and makers will return to paint and finish their masks, and learn finishing and embellishing…
