SOUNDWAVES

from 4:30 to 5:30 pm

Music has influenced visual art for centuries. How many artists do you know who play music while they create? Listening to music can help center you and facilitate that “zone” that artists swear by to get into a creative mind space. 

 

Sound Waves invites local and regional artists to submit artwork inspired by a specific piece of music or song. The submissions will be curated down to 10 artists to be featured in the exhibition at the R Gallery at Arlene’s Artist Materials. Part of the application will include the title of the song and the artist who made it. The goal will be to create a public playlist of music that can be accessed from a QR code posted in the gallery. The public will be encouraged to listen to the playlist while they view the artwork in the show to create an immersive experience for the viewer and perhaps inspire them to create their own artwork inspired by a piece of music.

About the Juror:

Becky Zeh is an interdisciplinary artist who grew up in Saratoga Springs, NY. In 2012 she earned her BFA in Drawing, with honors, from Pratt Institute. She has had a passion for the arts and art-making her whole life and has exhibited her work in several art galleries and businesses throughout New York State including, The Art Center of the Capital Region, Saratoga Arts, LARAC, Albany Center Gallery, The Hallway Gallery at Second Street Studios, 344 Storefront, The Blooming Artist Gallery, Spring Street Gallery, Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts, North Country Arts Council, among others. Her work has been published in Barzakh Magazine, Stance on Dance, Hypersaturation, and The Crit Zine by Symmetry Art Space. She has also been featured in The Daily Gazette and 518 Profiles Magazine. In 2023 she was the recipient of an Honorary Mention Award at the Annual Expressions Juried Art Show at North Country Arts Council in Glens Falls, NY.

In addition to supporting her own artistic practice, she is passionate about curating and installing art exhibitions and helping to facilitate exhibition opportunities for other artists in her area. She is currently working at Arlene’s Artist Materials/The R Gallery as an Assistant Curator, Custom Framing Specialist, and Sales Associate in Albany, NY. Rebecca is also a lifelong dancer. She has been taking improvisational dance classes with the same dance teacher, Lili Loveday since she was 6 years old and continues to dance to this day. Her unique experiences dancing outdoors with her dance class strongly inform her artistic practice and she strives to share these experiences with others through her mixed media drawings. She loves to travel with her husband, and visits art museums and galleries as much as possible! Her home, which is also her studio, is located in Ballston Lake, NY.

Submission Guidelines:

  •  All artists wishing to participate in the SOUNDWAVES must submit a complete application prior to the deadline of 5 pm (EST) on Saturday, December 28, 2024, and be selected by our juror, Becky Zeh. Any incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • Selected artist will be notified by January 6, 2025.

  • Submissions are open to all 2D and 3D media including, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media, fiber art, sculpture, etc.

  • Small-scale sculpture can be displayed on the wall via floating shelves. The shelves we have available are 16.5x10” or 15.75x4.5”

  • All artwork must be original and created by the artist

  • All artwork must be for sale

  • Artwork submitted will be the artwork displayed in the show.

  • Selected artists will be given a 30” by 40” space on the wall that their artwork will occupy, this means that one large piece can be submitted or multiple smaller pieces can be submitted with a maximum of 5 pieces all inspired by the same song.

  • Image file size must be at least 300 dpi and labeled in the following format: FristLastName_Title.jpg or FristLastName_Title.png. 

  • Exhibition List that corresponds to the images submitted. The list should include the artist's name, titles, mediums, sizes, year made, and prices (including 40% commission).

  • The title of the song and the name of the artist that inspired the artwork must be included in the application along with a written statement (200 words or less) explaining how the artwork connects to the song. 

  • All 2-dimensional work must be properly framed and ready to hang with appropriately installed hanging hardware at the time of drop-off.

  • Artists whose artwork has complicated installation instructions must contact the Curator, Becky at arlenesartist@gmail.com, prior to drop-off to make arrangements.

  • All artwork must be clearly labeled with the artist’s name, title, medium, price, email address, and phone number.

  • The artist will receive 60% of sold artwork with a 40% commission going to the R Gallery at Arlene’s.

  • All artwork must remain on display for the duration of Sound Waves, January 31 - February 28, 2025

  • Artwork pick up is between March 1 and March 6, 2025 during store hours, no exceptions.
